Translating text is a tedious task, which often requires reference to the original work.

Whilst the windows environment allows us to display two documents on a single computer screen, these documents are not linked and thus scrolling one document does not scroll the other.

Hence the Translation Aid is a software tool that is designed to display both the German and the translated English text side by side, linking the original and the translated text for easier reference.

Download the zipped archive.

Save the archive in a directory of your choice.

Unpack the archive into your chosen directory.

Run the Translation Aid software.

When you first start the Translation Aid software, you need to import the German text. Click on the 'Import German' Menu item. This opens a File dialog from where you may select the file to import.

Note: This file must be a plain text file.

Once you have selected the file, another file dialog will be displayed. In this second dialog, enter the workfile name of your choice. I.E. 'Book1Ch1'

You will note that the left grid now contains the file you loaded, broken into paragraphs per line.

The left text area also contains the text of the selected row.You may now enter your translation in the right panel which initially also displays the German text. This was done to retain foreign words in their original form.

When you have completed translating the paragraph, you may wish to spell check your translation by clicking the 'Spell Check' button above the right text window. Correct any typos you may have made and when finished, click the 'Done' button.

The translated text is moved into the grid and the selected grid row is advanced to the next text to be translated, filling the lower text areas accordingly.

For your convinience, there are Search and Replace functions associated with each of the text areas.

Your work is automatically saved at predetermined intervals and when you close the software, it will remember where you left off so that it will return to that exact place upon restart.

How to Extract your Final Work: Viewing your Work: Searching the Entire Text:
When you have completed your work, you may extract the translated text via the Export Menu option. This exports the text as a plain ASCII file.

If you require the completed text as an RTF document, you should use the 'Save English Text' option.

The 'View' menu option allows you to see the work you have completed in a Rich Text format. If you desire to cut and past your work to a Word document, You may do so from here. Click on the 'View' menu and select the 'View English Text' menu item. The window that opens has buttons to accomplish this task. The 'Select All' button selects the entire text and the 'Copy' button moves the selected text to the clipboard. Under the Edit menu item, there is a Search function that allows you to search either the entire German or English text.

Select the language you desire to search and enter the search word or words, click 'OK'

The resulting display shows both the German and corresponding English text. Use the 'Next' button to find the next search result. Click on the 'Goto Para No.' button to resume your translation at the selected row.
